MARTINA

Sitting in the conference room, now referred to as the Sunny D task force room, I glanced across the space at Hirsch, who paced while talking on his cell phone. Our eyes met, and he smiled ever so slightly. He was as happy as I was to be back in the game, working together at the sheriff’s department. It wouldn’t last forever, but nothing truly great did. We could enjoy it and save lives at the same time. We’d spent the better part of the day strategizing on how to capture those responsible for the recent deaths and find Katie Kimble.

Unsure of who Hirsch was talking to, I hoped he was on the phone with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department with an update on the warehouse in Santa Rosa where we’d seen the suspected drug dealers and the woman being held captive. They said they would patrol the area while not arousing suspicion.

Despite my weary bones, the case exhilarated me. Other than being a little shaky from too much caffeine, it felt good to be in the middle of it, working with an exceptional team.

Drakos Monroe was great. It just wasn’t the same. There was something special about having both law enforcement and private investigators working together. Different perspectives, law-abiding citizens and those who’d bent a few rules now and again. It was no surprise to anyone Vincent had joined the PI side. He and I had worked the gray areas a few times while working at the sheriff’s department. It was, of course, for the good of the victims, but we’d still found ourselves in some hot water.

Hirsch hung up the phone and hurried over. “That was the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department. They went to the warehouse. It’s locked up and there’s nobody there.”

“Did they go inside?”

“They can’t, without a warrant.”

“But can’t they enter if they believe someone inside is in danger?”

“Only if they can argue imminent danger in front of a judge. But how do you prove there’s someone who might be in danger without saying a friend broke in and heard some things?”

It was another reminder of why I wasn’t in law enforcement. Nodding, I said, “So, it’s up to the non-law enforcement folks to solve this one.”

He let out a sigh. “There were no cars at the warehouse, which likely means they’ve moved whoever was in that room. You said someone was guarding her, right?”

“Yes.” He had a point. It wasn’t likely she was still in that room, unless they’d killed her and felt there was no reason to guard the building anymore. But considering I knew how to get in pretty quickly, perhaps I should take a look for myself.

“What is the Sonoma County Sheriff going to do next? Are they going to surveil the warehouse, wait for someone to show up, and then ask if they can look around?”

“Officially, they have no reason to look. But they said they’ll keep patrol. They’ll swing in every so often and call us if they see anything.” The strategy reeked of classic law enforcement protocol—a wait-and-see approach.
